Abstract

In some high-performance parallel optical access memory disks being developed, the data is retrieved as a linear array. When interfacing the disk readout system to a VLSI chip that contains the required detectors and their associated circuits, it eases the design of the custom VLSI chip. This is because the constraint of having to layout the circuitry as a 2-D matrix is removed, thus the silicon is more efficiently used and design automation tools can be used more effectively. Use of a differential detect on scheme is also easier in the 1-dimensional case.
