Abstract
The SlideStore concept has been described earlier by Elphant1 and Burns2. This paper reviews the results of development during the past year in which the concepts were reduced to practice in several functioning machines. An archival optical memory with a total capacity of 800 Gigabytes based on a library of 2048 5"x5" slides is described. SlideStore uses a rectangular format and linear motions to write and read data. The velocity for high data rates is obtained through deflection of an argon laser beam with an AO deflector.
