Abstract

The SlideStore concept has been described earlier by Elphant¹ and Burns². This paper reviews the results of development during the past year in which the concepts were reduced to practice in several functioning machines. An archival optical memory with a total capacity of 800 Gigabytes based on a library of 2048 5"x5" slides is described. SlideStore uses a rectangular format and linear motions to write and read data. The velocity for high data rates is obtained through deflection of an argon laser beam with an AO deflector.
