Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate a passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser incorporating a side-polished birefringent fiber with index matching gel spread on the flat side as a passive Q-switch. It is shown that the laser produces Q-switched pulses with a ~2.74 μs temporal width at a 980nm-pump power of 57 mW. The tuning capability of the repetition rate and the pulse width by changing the pump power is also investigated.
