Abstract

A unique optical-fiber geometry has been developed that provides two low-loss optical channels within a single optical fiber. This concentric-core optical fiber is applicable to duplex or two-channel transmission in which extremely small fiber size and weight are required, for example, in aircraft, spacecraft, fiber-guided missiles, or other special purposes. In addition, the concentric-core fiber can be fabricated with the same equipment as conventional step- and graded-index glass-on-glass fibers, thus potentially offering lower cost per channel than conventional fiber-optic communication systems.
