Miniaturized, hybrid, 500 Mbit/sec optical receiver package for data-link applications

Abstract

Optical fibers could serve the purpose of a high capacity link (several hundred Mbit/ sec) to interconnect many digital terminals. For example, several computers performing parallel computation or several multiplexed video channels would need a shared bus for the transmission of data. Such links would generally be short (1000 m at most) and would need very fast transmitters and receivers. Semiconductor lasers have been modulated at Gbit/sec rates, and fast optical receivers have been recently reported.1 We describe a simple, hybrid receiver built to operate at 500 Mbit/sec in the NRZ format.
