Abstract

Connector and splice losses of optical fibers depend on a variety of factors, such as fiber-parameter variations and geometrical misalignments, fiber characteristics, location of the connector along the fiber, the type of source used, and on launch conditions.1,2 Adding the losses of the individual fibers and connectors in order to obtain the loss of the concatenated link may, therefore, substantially differ from actually measured values. In this paper we describe the measurement of the launch-numerical-aperture- (NA) dependent loss of graded-index (GI) fibers before and after connectorization, identify the steady-state (SS) condition, and demonstrate that the concatenated loss can be predicted to a good accuracy with such data.
