Abstract

The Bell System lightwave program centers around digital trunk transmission at the North American DS3 rate. 44.7 Mbit/sec handles enough voice circuits (672) on a pair of fibers to compete with the cost of alternative trunking systems and is still small enough to be attractive in a significant portion of the U.S. metropolitan trunk transmission links.
