Abstract

Because of their low loss and wide bandwidth, optical waveguides are eminently suitable as a transmission medium for wideband digital signals. In coaxial cable systems the repeater spacing for a 565~Mbit/sec system, for example, is ~1.5 km. When using optical waveguides, a repeater spacing of more than 10 km is possible in practical applications, allowing for adequate system margin.
