Effect of transverse-mode confinement on spectral broadening in directly modulated injection lasers

Abstract

It has recently been shown that transverse-mode stabilized laser diodes tend to exhibit single-longitudinal-mode oscillation under do bias conditions.1,2 This improvement is achieved by employing a narrow waveguide comparable with diffusion length. For high bit-rate long distance fiber-optic transmission, single-longitudinal-mode oscillation in modulation conditions is desirable. However, it is not yet clear how such narrow stripe geometry affects the axial-mode competition in dynamic operation conditions.
