Material considerations for long-wavelength optical waveguides

Abstract

Operation of optical waveguides at long wavelength is desirable because it promises low losses (Rayleigh scattering α1/λ4) and longer distances between repeaters. In addition, the core diameter becomes larger, and this eases the tolerance on fiber dimensions. Fused silica based fibers cannot be operated much beyond 1.6 μm.
