Abstract

Optical fiber with low loss over an extended wavelength region makes attractive the prospect of wavelength division multiplexing optical signals from several LED transmitters. LEDs offer relatively low cost and high reliability. Optimization of such a system demands consideration of the detailed spectral response of the multiplexing and demultiplexing devices, the LED spectra, and fiber attenuation and dispersion. This paper describes a study of the insertion loss and cross-talk attenuation that result when an interference filter device is used for multiplexing and demultiplexing LEDs. The results allow the optimum LED wavelengths and filters to be chosen for a range of system goals.
