Abstract
Wavelength multiplexers and demultiplexers are important components for increasing the information handling capacity of single-mode light wave systems. To be compatible with available low-loss single-mode fibers, which do not maintain linear polarization, such devices must be able to select a desired wavelength independent of polarization. To that end we have demonstrated, we believe for the first time, a polarization-independent optical waveguide filter. Wavelength selective coupling between a pair of mismatched Ti-diffused waveguides is achieved by using phase-matched electrooptic TE↔TM conversion.
