Abstract

As process improvements in the fabrication of graded-index fibers produce smoother profiles, the Influence of the refractive-index variation within individual layers will become increasingly important for obtaining higher bandwidth fibers. The refractive-index dispersion in individual layers has been observed in consolidated layers. However, its existence prior to consolidation has not been demonstrated. This paper describes experiments designed to determine the compositional variation in an individual MCVD layer prior to consolidation and suggests a possible mechanism for the observed results.
