Radiation damage in doped silica fibers

The deleterious effects of ionizing radiation on the properties of both pure silica and doped silica fiber-optic waveguides are well documented.1,2 Recent efforts have concentrated on the identification of specific core and cladding dopants which minimize the radiation-induced attenuation in the spectral range of interest for optical communications. In addition, the utilization of extrinsic factors, such as photobleaching, to accelerate the recovery processes of irradiated waveguides has been investigated. This paper will provide a review of some recent progress in these areas.
