Abstract
High-performance connectors required in future single-mode fiber transmission systems must have reproducably-low insertion losses as well as negligible reflections in order not to impair systems performance. Furthermore, since single-mode (SM) connectors are only required at the transmitting end, while potentially lower-loss multimode (MM) connectors can be employed at the receiving end, compatibility of the hardware of MM and MM connectors is most desirable. In this paper we describe an improved version of the transfer-molded biconic connector used in the FT3 lightwave system1 that satisfies above requirements.
