Abstract

The outside vapor deposition (OVD) process1,2 has extensive flexibility in making optical waveguide glass with a variety of properties. It is suitable for fabricating step-index multimode, graded-index multimode, and single-mode fibers with core to o.d. ratios from <0.04 to >0.8 and with the fractional refractive-index difference in the range 0 ≤ Δ ≤ 2.5% (Fig. 1).
