Abstract

The receiver sensitivity and operational performance of an InGaAs PIN/GaAs MESFET hybrid optical receiver have been investigated experimentally and compared with those of a germanium avalanche photodiode (APD) at the European main network digital rates of 34-565 Mbit/sec and 20-60°C temperature range. The two receivers reported in this paper represent the typical performance that can be achieved reproducibly with these designs, and the results have been obtained using identical test equipment and measurement procedures.
