Abstract

Separate experimental and theoretical studies have been carried out in this laboratory to establish (1) criteria for optimizing monomode fiber loss,1 (2) the dependence of splice loss on monomode fiber design,2 and (3) the location of the in-cable monomode microbending "catastrophe,"3 as a function of fiber OH content, geometry, and ESI design parameters (Δ, a, and v values) as appropriate.
