Abstract
Now that long-wavelength devices are becoming available, many fiber-optic communication links are being designed to operate in the 1.3-1.55-μm region where fiber attenuation can be reduced to <1 dB/km. With these low attenuation rates, the performance of many long distance unrepeatered systems is limited more by the length-bandwidth product of the fiber than by its attenuation. For this reason, the, optimization of fiber bandwidth at the long wavelengths has become extremely important for medium and high data rate fiber-optic links.
