Abstract

Refractive-index profiling of optical fiber preforms is now well established as an invaluable tool for fabrication process evaluation, preform quality control, and prediction of fiber properties. Essentially, the preform is transversely illuminated by a parallel beam of light, and the Index profile is reconstructed from the ray-deflection angles using a computer transform. The spatial filtering method permits simple acquisition of the ray-deflection data and allows accurate high-resolution index profiles to be computed. However, in common with all methods which view the preform transversely, errors result when the preform is noncircular, since the computer transform algorithm assumes circular symmetry. A solution for significantly asymmetric preforms is to use tomographic reconstruction of the profile section by section from deflection data taken at a number of azimuthal projections. However, this method is not well-suited to routine Inspections, since the tomographic computation is time-consuming.
