Abstract

We propose and demonstrate new optical switches in ion-exchanged glass waveguides via the thermooptic effect originating from the temperature dependence of the refractive index. In the optical switches proposed here, a small heater is placed on the waveguide to provide partial index change. The optical switching can then be performed by an externally applied voltage across the heater.
