Abstract

Very high-speed switch/modulators are expected to be important devices in future high-bit-rate lightwave systems and for high-speed signal processing. Effective direct modulation of semiconductor lasers appears to be limited to 1-2 Gbit/sec, and even then special laser structures or a short cavity to insure single-mode operation during modulation are necessary. Furthermore, high-speed switches would be very desirable for time division multiplexing applications.
