Abstract

Recently it has been pointed out1-3 that in the anomalous dispersion regime refractive-index nonlinearity will compensate for dispersion. For sufficiently high intensities this compensation is complete, and the pulse envelope will propagate as a soliton. i.e., without loss of integrity. However, this conclusion is only for a lossless system. It is, therefore, important to know for long distance applications of this phenomenon how far this remains so when loss is present, as it will be in any real system. The purpose of this work is to investigate this case.
