Lightwave systems applications in subscriber loop urban environs

Abstract

For the short loops typical of the urban environment, the long repeater spacings and high cross-section capacity of lightwave systems, so important to trunking applications, do not apply. However, lightwave systems provide the operating telephone companies, like New York Telephone (NYT), with the means to achieve customer requirements for security, immunity to interference, high flexible bandwidth, and automatic switching protection. They also satisfy internal needs via their small size, ease of installation, and virtually error-free transmission performance.
