Abstract
High-birefringence polarization-preserving fibers are being fabricated in several laboratories.1-4 They are being developed for applications that require a stable polarization state along the fiber length, even when it is subjected to various deployment configurations and environmental conditions. In a birefringent fiber, various (usually) random birefringence perturbations resulting from external conditions such as bends, twists, and non- circularly symmetric jackets as well as internal irregularities act on the fiber and couple light from one of its polarization modes to the orthogonal one.
