Abstract
Kinetic studies have pointed out that the index profile of VAD fibers is closely related to the polymorphisms of GeO2 in the soot preform.1,2 This paper describes that, in practical VAD soot preforms, a radially selective chlorination of GeO2 produces a synthetic silica cladding in the dehydration of the soot, which leads to a low-loss fiber.
