Optical receivers at 12 and 45 Mbit/sec with automatic gain control

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Optical receiver circuitry employed in the Western Electric fiber-optic subscriber loop carrier DS2C (12-Mblt/sec) and DS3 (45-Mbit/sec) system is described. Each of these fully manufacturable 1.3-1.5-μm PIN GaAs FET receivers features an automatic gain control circuit at the front end which results in a >40-dB optical dynamic range in the case of the OS2C receiver and an ~50-dB dynamic range in the case of the DS3 receiver. These wide dynamic ranges were achieved with minimal sensitivity penalties. Since these receivers were to be used in the outside loop plant of the Bell System, certain other aspects of system performance, such as wide temperature range operation (−40 to +85°C), compact hardware designs, and integration into an existing powering environment, were required.
