Abstract

The microbending effect in multimode fibers has been considered as a transduction mechanism for fiber-optic displacement sensors. Previous efforts1 were limited by the somewhat low microbending sensitivity of the sensing fiber and excess laser noise. We have significantly improved the performance of such a sensor by enhancing the microbending effect in the sensing fiber and reducing source noise.
