Abstract
The inherent advantages of wavelength multiplexing have recently been recognized in long-haul telecommunication links. However, the majority of fiber applications will entail short (<1-km) fiber lengths to unite local area network nodes, computers, etc. These applications require volume production, low cost, rugged construction, a broad temperature range in addition to low loss, and minimized cross talk. Multimode fibers are preferred. Aetna Telecommunications Laboratories has begun mass production at 10,000/year/station of multimode wavelength multiplexers. Simplified production techniques employing assemblers and using advanced materials allow all the above goals to be achieved.
