Abstract
Dispersion is an important functional parameter for monomode fiber. Theoretical models exist to predict dispersion performance as a function of refractive index and theoretical cutoff wavelength for step or slightly modified step-index designs. The relationship between theoretical and transmitted (measured) cutoff wavelength is tentative, actual fiber profiles can exceed the theoretical model limits, and the theoretical solutions are cumbersome when used for manufacturing and sales purposes. Hence an empirical evaluation was performed to develop a more useful relationship between nominally step-index fiber parameters and dispersion. The accuracy was better than that obtained when theoretical models were used.
