Abstract

Fiber-to-fiber 2x2 single-mode couplers have been successfully fabricated by several workers utilizing a fusion technique.1-3These initial couplers operated at wavelengths in the 633-850-nm region. Recently, the development of environ- mentally rugged single-mode couplers has also been demonstrated in the same wavelength region.4 To utilize fully the advantages of single-mode fiber transmission, a rugged coupler designed for operation at 1300 nm is desired. We described in this paper the development of such a coupler.
