Abstract

Wavelength division multiplex (WDM) transmission over multimode optical fibers was proposed in 1977 by W. J. Tomlinson and has since become an accepted new technique. The necessary components have essentially been mastered, and such multimode WDM systems are now in the field trial phase. A survey of these components and systems is given in Ref. 1.
