Abstract
This paper reports on a series of optical and physical refinements to an earlier generation of microoptic wavelength-division-multiplexing devices.1 Substantial improvements were obtained in the flatness of the passbands of the grating based demultiplexers. Precise control of the channel spacing was demonstrated. Moreover, because of the potential for easier manufacture, a single-ended filter based multiplexer was developed. The thermal stability of both single- and double-ended multiplexers was also investigated. In addition, data are presented on a new bidirectional coupler that was used in a system experiment.2
