Mach-Zehnder 17-GHz bandwidth modulator

Abstract

Over the past few years, a number of guided-wave modulators and switches have been demonstrated.1–3 We report here the demonstration of a traveling-wave Mach-Zehnder modulator (Fig. 1) for 0.83-μm wavelength with an Improved 3-dB bandwidth and a lower P/Δf figure than previously achieved. Intensity modulation up to 18 GHz was directly measured using a very high-speed detector. Measurements using an indirect swept frequency technique were also made for comparison.
