Abstract

Modal noise’ caused by laser coherence is a serious problem especially in an analog transmission system employing multimode fibers. The high- frequency superimposing method2 and the optical feedback method3 have been shown to be effective for laser coherence reduction by producing a stable multiple-axial mode operation. The mode hopping observed in conventional Fabry-Perot lasers is also a serious cause of generating modal and laser noise. The light source, suitable for an analog transmission system employing a multimode fiber, is believed to be a laser diode in stable single-mode operation with broad linewidth. A DFB laser is a candidate for such a light source.
