Abstract

The present-day telecommunications network can be divided into three basic segments: (1) Long and Short Haul—between switching centers; (2) Feeder—from a switching center to a remote distribution point on a business customer’s premises or in the telco outside plant; and (3) Subscriber Loop—the last leg to the individual subscriber. In addition to the telco network there are the well-established coaxial-cable-based CATV networks for TV program distribution and the emerging local area networks for providing data communications (possibly integrated with voice communications) within an organization's premises.
