Abstract
High-speed fiber-optics LANs can be configured in a variety of ways, such as rings, stars, and buses. Integrated-optics devices can be used as switchable taps and access couplers (e.g., Ref. 1). In the case of point-to-point link networks in the shape of a ring, the failure of one terminal causes the entire system to go down. If an optical bypass function is provided in such a network, system flexibility as well as reliability increases.
