Minitutorial: fiber-optic local area networks

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

This minitutorial discusses technical issues and trends in the evolution of optical fiber into local area networks (LANs). Contrasts between optical fiber LANs and competitive media, LANs vs large area networks, alternate LAN configurations, and high-speed multimode/single-mode fiber component performance/cost trade-offs in LAN applications are explored. Progress in LAN standardization is summarized. The aim of this minitutorial is to clarify the many conflicting issues and to project future trends in the application of optical fiber to LANs.
