Abstract
Great progress in optical fiber communications has been made possible by development of light sources with desirable properties in the requisite wavelength region and improvements in fabrication technology. Recent progress in light sources for optical communications is reviewed, emphasizing high-speed LEDs, high-performance 1.3-μm laser diodes, and dynamic single-mode lasers for 1.55-μm high-capactiy and long-distance transmission.
