Abstract

Multimode optical waveguide preforms fabricated by the vapor phase axial deposition (VAD) process1 characteristically exhibit a spiral structure in the distribution of the refractive index throughout the core. The helical nature of the VAD deposition induces radial as well as longitudinal variations in refractive index with a periodicity which is dependent on the deposition condit’ons.2,3
