Abstract

Efforts In 1.55-μm technology and systems have been Increasing at a rapid pace during the last two years. Such systems fall Into two categories1: those with fibers having considerable chromatic dispersion at 1.55 μm, thus requiring single-frequency lasers, or low bit rate transmission, and those with multilongitudinal mode lasers, thus requiring dispersion-shifted fiber. In each case, the 29.6-km cable core manufacturing experience reported here demonstrates fiber and cable designs that are suitable for undersea systems at 1.55 μm.
