Abstract

Minimum shift keying for frequency modulation (MSK-FM) has been proposed for high-speed coherent optical communication systems utilizing direct modulation of semiconductor diode lasers.1 Although frequency shift keying (FSK) is the more common modulation scheme in these systems,2 the enhanced FM response of the semiconductor laser due to thermal effects3 causes distortion of the FSK waveform which is data pattern dependent and thus can hamper reliable demodulation.
