Abstract

The mode-field diameter (MFD) of single-mode fiber can be obtained by several standardized techniques. An NBS/EIA round robin1 has shown that for dispersion-unshifted fibers around 1.3 µm, the techniques can be made to agree to within 1.7% (one standard deviation). The choice of technique is largely governed by ease of implementation.
