Abstract
To enable the new generations of 565-Mbit/s and 1.20-Gbit/s very long-haul systems, an optical receiver significantly superior to present-day products is necessary. Particular requirements include very wide bandwidth, improved sensitivity, good dynamic range with both bounded and unbounded line code digital sum variations, and compatibility with the additive service channels,1 which are now becoming widely used.
