Sensitivity limits on direct detection receivers

Abstract

Although direct detection optical receivers have continued to improve both in sensitivity and speed, their performance is still far from fundamental limits. The best results will be summarized with present receivers at speeds up to 4 Gbit/s, and possibilities for future improvements will be discussed.
