High-power superluminescent diodes

Abstract

The superluminescent diode (SLD) provides broadband amplified emission over the entire spontaneous emission spectrum. Its limited coherence makes it an ideal source for fiber-optic gyroscopes1 because it reduces the coherent noise from Rayleigh scattering and Faraday and Kerr effects due to laser light. High power (over 15 mW) is needed to increase sensitivity and offset coupling losses to single-mode fiber. We have developed a structure which routinely emits 15 mW of spontaneous light and 28 mW for the best device.
