Abstract

In optical fiber communication and optical circuit systems, a lot of components such as branching and star couplers have been reported.1-3 Almost all these are limited to planar structures and are of the step-index type. Considering low loss and highly dense integrated circuits, steric gradient-index (GRIN) waveguides are expected. Up to now. however, such an optical waveguide has not been obtained because of limited manufacturing processes. We propose a new interfacial-gel copolymerization technique for steric GRIN optical-circuit elements and lens arrays with polymer materials, we believe for the first time.
