Abstract

This tutorial provides an introduction to the design, operating characteristics, and system performance of semiconductor lasers and LEDs used in optical fiber communication systems. It covers surface and edge-emitting LEDs, buried heterostructure lasers, and single-frequency lasers. In recognition of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the semiconductor laser, this minitutorial highlights; major historical developments.
