Abstract
The problem of transverse and axial misalignment sensitivity associated with the coupling of single-mode fibers is often addressed by using an expanded beam technique. This technique improves the coupling tolerances for relative displacements of the expanded beams. The success of this scheme relies on the integrity of the bond between the fiber and the lens, in that the relative motion of these two components defeats the purpose of the expanded beam approach. Usually epoxy or mechanical bonds are used at the fiberlens interface.
