Abstract
Recent studies on optical performance of Zr-based fluoride fibers, such as the Rayleigh coefficient measured from an actual fiber segment as 0.6 dB/km·λ4 and transmission loss reduction to 0.7 dB/km, strongly support the potentiality of making ultralow-loss mid-IR transmitting fibers.1,2 The transmission loss level of current fibers is a few orders of magnitude higher than the projected value due to transition metal impurities and defect scatterers. This paper describes several attempts to decrease extrinsic losses as well as a waveguide structure control technique.
